How to Refill Canon Toner Cartridges
What you’ll need
Compatible toner powder (for your exact Canon model)
Small funnel or toner bottle with spout
Screwdriver (usually Phillips)
Gloves and paper towels (toner is messy)
Optional: replacement chip (some models require it)
Step-by-Step Process
Prepare your workspace
Cover the table with paper or newspaper, wear gloves, and shake the toner bottle gently to loosen the powder.
Remove the cartridge
Take the toner cartridge out of the printer and place it on a flat surface.
Locate the refill port
On the side of most Canon cartridges there is a round plastic plug or cap. Use a screwdriver to gently pry it out.
Empty excess toner
Lightly tap out old toner powder into a bag or trash bin. This prevents clumping and print defects.
Refill with new toner
Insert the funnel or spout into the refill port and slowly pour in the correct amount of toner (typically 80–100 g depending on the cartridge model).
Seal the cartridge
Replace the plastic plug securely. If it’s damaged, use a proper replacement plug or high-quality tape.
Check or replace the chip
Some Canon cartridges have a smart chip that must be reset or replaced. Without this, the printer may still display “toner empty.”
Reinstall and test
Put the cartridge back into the printer and print a test page. If the print is light or streaky, gently shake the cartridge side to side to distribute the toner evenly.
That’s it! With a little care, you can refill a Canon toner cartridge in about 10–15 minutes and save money compared to buying new ones.
