Toshiba’s $9,000 T5200 Luggable PC — Back to Life in 2025

Toshiba’s ,000 T5200 Luggable PC — Back to Life in 2025

Sponsored by PCBWay:

The Toshiba T5200 wasn’t just another PC clone — it was Toshiba’s idea of a portable workstation.
Launched in 1989, this luggable packed a 386 processor, bright orange plasma screen, and expansion slots into a machine aimed at professionals. Prices started around $9,000, and Toshiba even offered OS/2 and their elusive UNIX variant, T/PIX.

In this episode, I take a closer look at the T5200/100, which arrived with a faulty floppy drive. A simple swap wasn’t possible — Toshiba used a proprietary 26-pin connector. So I built a custom cable and added a small hardware mod to bring it back to life. Along the way, we’ll explore its unusual RAM slots and even an MS-DOS 4 install.

In this episode:

00:00 Intro
00:53 Toshiba T5200 Retrospective
04:18 T7200’s Proprietary RAM Modules
05:10 Building a 26-pin to 34-pin Floppy Drive Adapter
07:04 720K Or 1.44M Mode – Why Not Both?
09:26 Conclusion
